Broken Jaw Healed

The study and applications of the teachings of Christian Science have brought me spiritual unfoldment, healings and opportunities to help others.

One of these healings occurred when in an automobile collision my chin struck the steering wheel with force, cutting my lip and pushing the lower front teeth back an inch. This was a shock and rather traumatic so I called a Christian Science practitioner who calmed and comforted me with assurances of God’s everpresence as our refuge and strength. She said she would continue to support me in prayer. I was able to tend to details. The lip stopped bleeding and there was no pain. A friend suggested that I go to a dentist to have the teeth put back in line. I called one and this kind man said to come to his office. When he looked in my mouth he said, “I cannot help you because your jaw is broken.” He said he would arrange for a physician to set the bone and left me alone. I had never resorted to medical treatment. I prayed silently, “Father, I am listening for thy guidance and am willing to do what is right. “Not my will, but thine be done.”

The dentist came to say he had been unable to locate a doctor but would keep trying. I thanked him and said that I would go home. A fellow church member came and took me home. She was very supportive.

I called the practitioner to tell her what had transpired. She said that she would pray with me, whatever I decided to do. I told her that I always relied on God and knew that with Him all things are possible, as the Bible says. I turned to Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science. On page 402 she writes, “Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged. However, it is but just to say that the author as already in her possession well-authenticated record of the cure, by herself and her students through mental surgery alone, of broken bones, dislocated joints, and spinal vertabrae.” Of course, I would choose the most skilful surgeon!

My sister came to my home and was a great help. She, the practitioner and I held to the fact that my true body, my spiritual identity, was intact and not touched by accident or injury and that this fact could be demonstrated as Christ Jesus proved.

My lip healed, the teeth went back into place and the jaw became normal. On the eighth day I served as Reader in our church with no difficulty. I am truly grateful for the dedicated work of the practitioner, and for the help of my sister and friend. Their undoubting support certainly contributed to the healing. I am thankful for the greater confidence and spiritual enlightenment this healing brought.
