Working With A Song Reveals Freedom

One day I was working with a song I had written, changing a few lines to fit more of a Christian Science way of thinking because a friend and I were going to perform it for a Christian Scientist. I was changing the line from “never recognized by my past or my shame” to “never recognized by my history or genes”. Suddenly the thought came to look up the word ”history” in the concordance to Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

What I found was beautiful. On page 547, line 29 reads, “The true theory of the Universe, including man, is not in material history but in spiritual development.” I took this to mean that a man is not tied to what he has done, not done, or inherited. A man truly is his spiritual development. I was ecstatic. There it was right in front of me. Such a freeing thought. It freed me from my past completely including all mistakes, injuries, heartbreaks, even all things known or unknown to me.

My true history is in my spiritual development. Instantly the realization came to me that I could apply this to all others making it easier to forgive and forget. Their true history is their spiritual development too. I could apply this fresh idea of no history to my Church, my Reading Room, and even the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It didn’t matter if it happened a hundred years ago or just moments ago. All guilt, anger and frustration just lifted from me like a cloud and floated away. Any fear I had over genetically inherited disease left too. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Retrospection and Introspection, “The human history needs to be revised, and the material record expunged “. Expunged means to erase or strike out; to eliminate completely; annihilate. I was finally free. I could forgive others and myself and move forward with a renewed spirit.

Well, we performed the tune for our class, our gift to our teacher. It was difficult for me not to cry tears of joy during the performance. I was, and am, eternally grateful.
